Hi, I’m Carissa.
I was about 37 weeks pregnant with my second baby when I found out that she had moved into a transverse position in my womb. A transverse lie is one where baby is positioned across the womb with head at one side of the abdomen and feet at the other side; a position that makes natural vaginal birth impossible unless the baby turns. A transverse lie is relatively uncommon, reportedly occurring in one in every 2000 births.
Since I didn’t want the longer recovery time involved with a caesarean delivery I decided to research methods of encouraging my baby to turn and resume her former head-down position.
I found out that there were a range of options to help a baby change position from a transverse lie, including obstetric methods of manipulation, chiropractic methods, exercise, and acupuncture.
I decided to start by doing some exercises around the home to encourage my baby to turn into the correct position. After about five days of exercises, including crawling around the house on my hands and knees, my baby had still not turned.
I was getting a bit nervous that my baby had not moved out of the transverse lie. The more I thought about it, the more strongly I felt that I did not want a caesarean section. I felt particularly strongly about the fact that I may not even have the choice.
I called my chiropractor, Darren Leukefeld, and explained to him what was going on. He seemed confident that he could help me encourage the baby to turn. He assured me that all the techniques he would use were safe and I believed him as I’d had plenty of experience with chiropractic before.
After the first session the baby still hadn’t moved. We waited a few days, I kept doing my other exercises, and then I had another chiropractic session with Darren. I’d now had two sessions with Darren and both had been very straightforward, involving only very gentle manipulation and stretching. I had a few aches and pains in between appointments but I put it down to all the normal pregnancy discomforts of the late third trimester.
I was due for my next appointment with my obstetrician, so I was hoping for some good news. He told me that my baby had moved – into the transverse lie on the other side! I was disappointed and more nervous than ever, but I thought to myself ‘If baby moved all the way to the other side I know she can move to head-down’. So I rang Darren and asked if we could try more chiropractic. I was well within my final week of pregnancy by this stage, more determined than ever, and doing my floor exercises at every chance I could get.
Darren and I had another appointment and he used the same methods as in the previous sessions. Again, I was due to see my obstetrician. I hadn’t felt many great movements from my baby after my third chiropractic session with Darren so I wasn’t holding out any hopes.
But this time the news was fabulous – my baby had finally turned to the head-down position! A few days later my little girl was born in a safe and natural birth. There is no doubt that the chiropractic techniques Darren used, along with my floor exercises, helped to turn my baby into the correct position in readiness for birth.
I extend my gratitude to Darren and I look forward to visiting him again so I can get my body back in shape after giving birth!
